Verse 8 in this chapter indicates that this Gog Magog war will be against a people resettled in the land, and v12 indicates that it is a place of rebuilt ruins.. As such, since it finds no historical conclusion, it cannot refer to anything prior to and including WWII, but must look for a time afterwards. Of possible consideration would be the six day war of 1967, if that was said to include Gog. The nations involved certainly were aided by Russia, commonly considered to be Gog and Magog. Lack of an earthquake in 1967 seems to indicate as well that this will be a yet future war.
Most specifically, this is pestilence and blood which will overthrow the enemy. Some divide Ezekiel 38 and Ezekiel 39 as two separate wars, and this may be the case, but in this chapter, it is just noted that God is magnified in the sight of many nations.
