An idea that has floated around in certain circles is that the seven churches represent seven church ages throughout history, from the time after Christ to the current. One of the most famous people who promoted this idea was William Branham.
The idea is not specifically specified in the Scriptures, but the premise could be supported in the history of the church.
Today, that would leave us in the era of the Laeodicean church, a lukewarm church that has material prosperity, but does not know that it is really poor, miserable, naked, and blind.
While fully developing this theme could take many texts, it is mentioned because it seems like a viable warning to our generation. Regardless of whether the actual analogy is the original intent of Jesus in His text, the warnings, promises, and potential blessings for each of these churches would apply to us, no matter where or when we live. Let us not come under the rebukes of any of the churches, and may we overcome and possess the high calling, and all that He has promised us.
