CLAIM: The fullness of what Daniel prophesied here will occur in the final years of natural history (v. 17, 26) as we know it. This vision starts by describing the rise of Medo-Persia and Greece (Alexander the Great). Daniel 8:9-14 describes Antiochus Epiphanes’ attack on Jerusalem (v. 9). Daniel’s prophecies of the Antichrist in verses 23-25 were partially fulfilled by Antiochus Epiphanes.
Daniel 8 was fulfilled through the works of Antiochus Epiphanes. The attachment of this to a future anti christ figure is unnecessary and unwarranted by the text.
Further attempts to attach the “little horn” of Daniel 7 to that of Daniel 8 also fail in scrutiny of the text. In Daniel 7, the little horn is part of the fourth empire. In Daniel 8, it is part of the third. These are clearly different individuals, and the major image here is “horn”, which is used for a host of individuals, including all the other horns in both passages. The addition of the descriptive “little” or “small” is in no wise conclusive, nor should the association be regarded as necessary.
